I'm also using Snow Leopard and the extension doesn't appear to be supported. You could probably find a way to create an image yourself using AppleScript (although not easily):
However, if you just want to be able to get the dmg file instead of using an image or running a script, you could just double-click on the dmg file and choose "Open" from the open dialog box. I've done this before with similar files and it works fine.
