As a consequence, they are different than most calculations, since they are character driven, rather than symbol driven. Many people argue that the main problem with the spreadsheet is the lack of a formal language. My opinion is that formal language is not necessary to define the language. In fact, most programmers know that the real problem is that people have too many restrictions on what they can do with it. Without trying to be arrogant, I know of four languages which are fully capable of anything that I need or want. These are BASIC, QUICKCALC, VISUAL BASIC and the StarOffice spreadsheet. Another problem with spreadsheet is that people build a spreadsheet with calculations, and then complain that it is too hard to program. I have nothing against this. I have built a spreadsheet, and built programs to manipulate it. But if you build a spreadsheet just to make it hard to program, I am happy to do it for you. If you write a simple program which will take in the formula and dump it on the screen, I will be able to program it as I see fit. I have written a simple program which does just this.
